David J. Sobba, M.D.
Following the completion of his general orthopaedic training in 1990,
Dr. Sobba held a Sports Medicine fellowship in South Lake Tahoe and received
advanced training in the treatment of fractures in Munich, Germany. He began
practicing medicine in Whitefish in 1996 and opened his own practice, Peak
Orthopaedics & Sports
Medicine in 1999. He was a physician for the U.S. Women’s Alpine Ski Team
from 1991 to 2001. Since moving to Whitefish he has been the physician for
the U.S. Telemark Ski Team, many of whose team members reside in the Flathead
Valley. Dr. Sobba is an avid outdoor enthusiast with an active healthy lifestyle
and a committed runner, skier, hiker and climber who can relate to many orthopaedic
injuries from personal experience.
Dr. Sobba practices as a Sports Medicine and general Orthopaedic
Surgeon. His sports medicine fellowship has proven to be advantageous in
the treatment of many injuries seen in the Flathead Valley. Sports medicine
is not only for the athlete, the same attitudes in treating the athlete
carry over and are very helpful in the care of the many non-sport injuries
he treats. He has performed countless arthroscopic reconstructions of the
knee and the shoulder of both athletes and non-athletes. His practice also
includes minimally invasive total knee replacement as well as hip and shoulder
total joint replacement. Dr. Sobba leads the field in carticel surgery in
Montana. Also known as Autologous Chondrocyte Implantations, it is a procedure
primarily designed for post-traumatic cartilage replacement in the knee.
Healthy cartilage cells are harvested from the knee, replicated to nearly
12 million cells and re-implanted at a later time. This cutting edge surgery
is designed to reproduce healthy articular cartilage
to restore the knee to good health. In addition, Dr. Sobba provides general
orthopaedic care to treat many fractures and sprains through non-operative
care and physical therapy.
Above and beyond its excellence in orthopaedic care, Peak Orthopaedics
is about compassion and treatment of the whole person. “We strive to treat
the entire patient, not just as a knee or shoulder injury, in order to get
our patients back to a healthy and active lifestyle.” As a result of his
very active lifestyle, Dr. Sobba has experienced many orthopaedic injuries
and resultant surgeries and therefore brings an especially compassionate
and caring perspective to the treatment of his patients. As a cancer survivor,
he successfully completed a difficult treatment regimen with the help of
a very caring family, health care team, and the support of many friends.
He realizes the importance of a strong support system to help you through
tough times. “I believe the journey through these times has taught me many
valuable lessons especially when it comes to family. I feel these lessons
learned have made me a more effective, compassionate and caring father,
partner, and healthy physician. My goal is to treat each
and every patient I encounter with these very same attitudes. I believe
that my patients can benefit greatly from an attitude of genuine caring
and empathy.”
Dr. Sobba has two wonderful children, Perrey and Walter. Both are
active outdoor enthusiasts, in addition to being very fine students. Perrey
pursues figure skating with a passion and enjoys many winter and summer
sports. Walter is pursing alpine ski racing and loves a variety of sports
the Flathead has to offer.
